What’s in a gift?
Today, I received possibly the most effortful (is that a word?) gift anyone has ever given me in my entire life. Suffice to say, I was shocked to see a scrapbook of my pictures compiled by another person, who has actually not known me for that long yet. Blame Facebook. And my vanity.
What makes a gift special? Of course we all love the idea of receiving presents, but I can safely assume that there are certain gifts that we appreciate more than others. For reasons like:
- The sender is special. I am pretty sure if you have a major crush on some guy, you will absolutely treasure anything he gives you. Sentimental people (like me) might even keep candy wrappers. And gift wrappers. And receipts from restaurants. Whatever.
- It’s something you’ve always wanted. Especially when it’s expensive. Especially when it’s an expensive gadget. HAHA.
- The element of surprise. I guess one of my personal reasons for loving a gift is when I don’t expect it, or I did not ask for it myself. Just because I love being surprised.
- It’s something memorable. Or a memento of something special. But of course.
Anyhow, no matter what the gift is, the more important matter is the feeling behind it. It’s hard to appreciate a gift without appreciating the feeling. Just as it does not matter who likes you. What matters is whom you like.
