It’s a sad, sad phenomenon that despite all its beauty and grandeur, the Philippines is slowly becoming
infamous for the things that but a few people are responsible for. Corruption in the government. The worst airport. Human trafficking.
Yes, you read that right. Human trafficking. Trafficking of people, especially women and children to a life of slavery and prostitution. If you thought slave markets were things of the ancient past, well, you are wrong. The Philippines is one of the countries with the highest number of prostituted children. Apparently, we have a very active sex trade industry, and what’s worse, most victims are children ages 12 and above.
We do have a law- RA 9308, or the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003, but as with all regulations, the written law is useless without people brave enough to uphold it. And like in this case where the victims are powerless children, who would be brave enough to go against the influential people and stand up for these innocent kids?
No one. No one, until we all stand up together as one. You may say that you are just one and there is nothing you can do about it, well I am telling you that you are one, and you can definitely do something about it. Action begins with awareness. Open your eyes to the reality of what is happening to our country, to the women and children who are being robbed of the lives that they could have had. We should put a stop to the naiveness of society, because evil thrives when everyone turns a blind eye to it.
It is naive to say that there is nothing we can do about it when world organizations such as the US Aid and Australian AID are doing everything they can to let the Filipinos know, to put an end to Exploitation and Trafficking. to EXIT.
This may be just a concert to some, but this is definitely more than that. This is a light of hope for the children, for the future of our country.
